This was exciting because we brought a band from Pittsburgh, Bitter Delores, to beautiful downtown Youngstown. At the time of the show I'd heard of them but never heard their music. They went on first and powered through their set with intricate changes and powerful yet pretty vocals. They proved to be a great act to play with.
My rock 'n' roll band (not mine solely - Mato's, Heinrich's, and Dom's also) took the dirty stage next. I was very busy throwing up the night before compliments of Mr. Influenza, but he was no match for my will to conquer the stage. I would've played even if I had to sit in a chair with a bucket by my side. Anyway, we played a solid show throwing in two new songs - "Applejab" and "Chocolate Mess (working title for now)." Both of these songs are quite different stylistically for us but were still received very well. We played the rest of the set with enough energy and enthusiasm to demand an encore performance, but we didn't oblige. Mato and I have recently added a new "pleasant surprise" tune to our repetoir to be played only if the "encore" situation arises again. It really is a surprise; although, it may not be too pleasant.
Well that about sums up the night - a great show after a day of sickness, plenty of broads and dudes, and a good night's rest. Nearly Perfect.
As compared to what I wrote in my last journal entry, this past month's show in Youngstown started out as being a welcome surprise. For the first half of our performance we played quite well, and the energy level was high. We also pulled about 140 people on a Monday night - which is actually pretty good, considering that it was Winter break. We even tried out a couple new songs, one of which came out great. It's kind of a return to our more "quirky" (for lack of a better term) sound. However, the other new song fell flat during the show, but I think we just need some time to work on it.
Unfortunately, the show lost its drive during the second half and it fizzled out at the very end. Mato said that he didn't play very well (even though I really didn't notice), and Richie had been sick for a while, so those things might have contributed. Other than that, both Dom and I had a good show, and it could have been much worse.
I had a wonderful time this fun filled night at the Cedar's Lounge. We played with Pittsburgh based Bitter Delores and I must applaud them for their lovely cover of Til' Tuesday's "Voices Carry." I was pretty impressed by this rock n roll unit's tight performance. I hope we do some more shows with them in the future.
Playing Cedars has
become almost too comfortable. Little thought goes into the show and once
in a while we defeat the odds and throw out a lovely set of love 'em and
leave 'em tunes. On this fine evening, my guitar playing would have
sounded mo' better if I didn't have any fingers, or if someone else was
playing it. Aside from my performance, I would say a good time was had by
all and many a beverage was consumed. Boy, I sure hope the owner is
happy!
